Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council has outlined a clear policy response to Chinese maritime activities in the island's eastern waters, establishing a 24-nautical-mile threshold as the basis for government action.[1] According to Deputy Minister Shen Youzhong, the government will avoid escalating tensions beyond the 24-nautical-mile boundary while maintaining an uncompromising stance on sovereignty within it.[1]
The council plans to convey Taiwan's concerns and objections to Beijing through third-party channels and existing communication mechanisms.[1] Officials characterized current Chinese actions as primarily symbolic assertions of jurisdiction through verbal claims, warning that the situation would become "considerably serious" if China escalates to conducting inspections on vessels.[1] To counter these incursions, Taiwan will strengthen its monitoring and deterrence capabilities, with particular emphasis on deploying unmanned aerial vehicles to enhance surveillance of the disputed waters.[1]
