Ningbo Library has launched a thematic exhibition dedicated to Edgar Snow's seminal work "Red Star Over China," showcasing 16 language versions of the book 1. The exhibition, which traces the book's creation, dissemination, and enduring significance, has drawn 47,000 visitors since opening, with young people accounting for more than half of attendees 1.
Snow, an American journalist, spent four months conducting fieldwork in northern Shaanxi beginning in June 1936 1. The English-language original was published in London in October 1937, selling over 100,000 copies within weeks 1. The Chinese translation, titled "Travels to the West," debuted in February 1938 with an initial print run of 2,000 copies; the book went through four printings within less than a year, eventually reaching a circulation exceeding 80,000 copies 1. The work remains the first comprehensive historical record of the Long March 1.
The book's influence has continued to grow across generations. A 1979 translation by Dong Lezhe achieved circulation of 1.65 million copies within two years 1. In September 2017, the work was incorporated into middle school Chinese language curricula as part of the "Classics Reading Guide" program 1. Since March 2024, an initiative titled "I Read Classics with My Child" has expanded to over 50 cities across China and internationally 1.
