Elizabeth Struhs, an eight-year-old girl, died on January 7, 2022, from diabetic ketoacidosis after her father stopped providing insulin treatment for her type 1 diabetes.1 Her family belonged to an extremist religious cult called "Saints," which rejected medical intervention.1 An inquest has determined that multiple government agencies' "lack of curiosity" about the family's religious beliefs represented a "missed opportunity" to save her life.1
The girl had previously been hospitalized for diabetic ketoacidosis in 2019, and her parents were convicted of child neglect at that time.1 Throughout her life, her mother, Kerrie Struhs, repeatedly expressed her religious beliefs to police, medical workers, teachers, parole officers, and child safety workers.1 Despite these communications, authorities did not adequately investigate or act upon the information.1 Inquest officer Ainslie Kirkegaard noted that government departments had failed to demonstrate curiosity about the mother's beliefs.1
All 14 adult members of the Saints organization were convicted of manslaughter by negligence in connection with Elizabeth's death.1 In response to the case, Queensland Police established an "Ideologically Motivated" crime classification flag in June 2026.1
