A Victorian coroner has determined that online sports betting addiction was the direct and primary cause of death for Kyle Hudson, a 22-year-old Australian who died by suicide on July 6, 2021.1 Coroner Paul Lawri conducted a court investigation into Hudson's death and concluded that the young man's gambling compulsion played a central role in his tragic end.1
Hudson's betting activity over four years totaled AUD 895,733 across platforms including Sportsbet, which handled 85 percent of his wagers.1 In the final six months of his life, he placed bets on 110 days out of 187, averaging 9.2 bets per gambling day.1 During this period, his betting triggered the system's behavioral alert mechanism 37 times—approximately once every six weeks.1 Despite this intensive pattern of activity, Hudson's net losses exceeded AUD 47,000.1
Coroner Lawri was highly critical of the betting industry's response, stating that "Kyle's case reveals in the starkest possible way the human cost of online gambling."1 The coroner found that betting companies failed to effectively identify and intervene in Hudson's gambling harm.1 In his findings, Lawri recommended that the Australian government strengthen regulation by prohibiting online gambling advertising, establishing a national online gambling regulator, and creating an independent database to monitor betting behavior.1
