A Russian military satellite has conducted an unusually close orbital approach to a commercial remote-sensing satellite operated by the United States, marking what orbital intelligence analysts say is an unprecedented unauthorized encounter in space.1 The Russian satellite, Kosmos 2612, maneuvered from a distance of several hundred kilometers to extreme proximity of ICEYE-X36, circled the American spacecraft, and remained nearby for a period before departing.1
Kosmos 2612 was launched in April from a Russian spaceport in the country's north aboard a Soyuz rocket.1 According to LeoLabs, an orbital intelligence company, at least four satellites deployed during that same launch adjusted their trajectories to track ICEYE-X36.1 The orbital approach represents the first known instance of an unauthorized close-proximity maneuver of this nature, according to LeoLabs's assessment.1
