Endurance Energy, a Seattle-based company, has successfully conducted the world's first demonstration of an underwater geothermal power plant near Axial Seamount in the Pacific Northwest.1 The 3-ton prototype device was deployed for three weeks in September near the active underwater volcano, located approximately one mile below the ocean surface.1 Although the system generated net positive electricity for less than 10 seconds during the test, the results represent a proof of concept for harnessing geothermal energy from submarine volcanic environments.1
The company views the deep ocean as an advantage for its technology, with CEO Andrew Redd explaining that "the deep sea provides us with unlimited supplies of cold seawater for cooling, and its weight keeps the system and wellbore pressurized, allowing our power plant to be very compact."1 Endurance Energy plans to commercialize this technology to serve Pacific island nations and other customers seeking renewable alternatives to imported fossil fuels.1
