Scientists from the University of Manchester's Tyndall Centre for Climate Research have written to the UK Prime Minister, calling on him to reject approval for new drilling projects at the Jackdaw and Rosebank oil and gas fields in the North Sea.[1] The researchers argue that approving these new offshore developments would contradict the climate pledges the Prime Minister made during his time as mayor of Greater Manchester, where he championed an ambitious carbon neutrality target to be achieved by 2038.[1]

The consultation period for the Jackdaw oil field is set to close on August 8.[1] Labour had previously pledged not to issue new oil and gas licenses, though the Jackdaw and Rosebank fields had already entered the approval process before the last general election.[1]
