Tech Sergeant Ian Patterson of Fort Stewart, Georgia, was fatally injured while performing a rappelling demonstration at the Alamodome in San Antonio before a college football game between the University of Texas at San Antonio and the Navy on Saturday.12 Patterson fell from the rafters of the 170-foot-tall venue during the pre-game aerial descent display.2 He was pronounced dead following treatment at a hospital.2
Patterson had served 15 years in the US military and was recognized as the 2022 Air Force Special Operations Command Instructor of the Year.12 At the time of the accident, he served as a tactical air control party instructor at Joint Base San Antonio.2 The game proceeded approximately 10 minutes after the incident, with UTSA ultimately defeating Navy 38–34 in front of more than 23,000 spectators.1 Air Force Brigadier General Scott Mills responded to the tragedy, stating: "This tragedy is deeply felt throughout the 57th Wing.
