The acquisition faced competition from other companies, including Databricks, which also bid for the startup 1.
Stripe CEO Patrick Collison stated: "Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for AI, and together with OpenRouter we'll help businesses maximize profitability by routing their requests intelligently and spending their tokens efficiently" 1. The acquisition aligns with Stripe's existing AI-focused initiatives, which include Metronome, a token billing tool; Tempo, a micropayment settlement platform; and Privy, a stablecoin wallet service for AI agents 1.
