Researchers at the University of Warwick have identified the first known green star, a white dwarf designated WD J1330+6435, according to findings announced on October 19, 2026.1 The discovery challenges the long-held assumption that stellar color is determined solely by temperature, revealing instead that the extreme physical conditions in white dwarf atmospheres can produce unexpected hues through complex interactions between different elements.1
The green coloration of WD J1330+6435, which has a surface temperature of approximately 4,000 degrees Celsius, results from sodium in its atmosphere absorbing the orange portion of the light spectrum and leaving behind a ghostly green glow.1 Analysis of 151 white dwarfs within 20 parsecs of Earth suggests that roughly one in thirty white dwarfs may display such anomalous colors, with the sample revealing five stars exhibiting unexpected hues: two yellow and three pink alongside the newly discovered green specimen.1 Mark Hollands, a researcher from the University of Warwick's Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, noted that "these extremely dense stars can produce colors that people did not anticipate, and some of these colors have genuinely surprised me."1
The research, published in RAS Techniques and Instruments (RASTI) in 2026, also identified WD J1011+2845 as potentially the reddest star on record, located 48 light-years from Earth.1
