Researchers from Mayo Clinic and Virginia Tech have identified that fatty liver disease consists of five different biological subtypes, each carrying distinct risks for liver failure, cancer, heart disease, and other complications 1. The discovery emerged from an analysis of genetic and clinical data from more than 4,600 patients and was published in Nature Communications 1. The findings demonstrate that fatty liver disease develops through multiple distinct biological pathways, including forms associated with obesity and diabetes as well as variants driven by genetic differences 1.
Approximately 30 percent of adults globally have fatty liver disease 1, underscoring the public health importance of this classification breakthrough. Certain genetic subtypes progress to severe liver damage more rapidly even in patients without metabolic risk factors 1. Additionally, the study identified for the first time specific associations between particular fatty liver disease subtypes and depression, sleep apnea, and migraines 1.
The research team plans to evaluate how available treatment options, including GLP-1 receptor agonists, perform across the different subtypes 1. This targeted approach could enable more personalized therapeutic strategies based on individual disease biology.
