U.S. aerospace company Sceye successfully conducted a round-trip flight of an unmanned stratospheric airship from New Mexico to Japan between August and September 2026, lasting approximately one month.1 The vehicle, which operated at an altitude of 60,000 feet, was designed to test the viability of high-altitude platforms functioning as airborne cellular towers.1
The airship employed helium for lift and electric propellers for propulsion, supplemented by solar panels and battery systems to enable sustained operations.1 According to CEO Mikkel Frandsen, the platform's operational altitude offers significant advantages: "We can loiter in a work area at roughly 60,000 feet in the stratosphere, we're twice the altitude of air traffic, above jet streams, but 30 times closer than low-orbit satellites."1 The aircraft was based near Albuquerque in New Mexico.1
The mission demonstrated Sceye's technology for maintaining stationary positioning at extreme altitude, a capability intended to support telecommunications and other applications where extended hovering at high elevation proves beneficial.
