The United Nations World Food Programme is scaling back its operations in Gaza due to severe funding shortfalls, reducing the number of people it can assist each month from approximately 1.6 million to 1.1 million starting in October.1 This reduction means that around 500,000 Palestinians will lose access to the organization's support as financial constraints force difficult operational decisions.
The funding decline exceeds 50 percent compared to 2025 levels, according to WFP officials.1 The situation is particularly dire given that two-thirds of Gaza's population—roughly 2 million people—currently face food crisis conditions classified at the third phase of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, while 200,000 Palestinians are at the emergency level, just one step away from famine.1 Approximately 80 percent of Gaza's workforce is unemployed, and one in eight children suffers from chronic malnutrition or stunting.1
To mitigate the shortfall, the WFP has already implemented several cost-cutting measures, including reducing food box distributions from two per recipient to one and cutting back cash assistance and community kitchen meal services.1 WFP Director Shaun Hughes warned that "these are very fragile gains, easily reversed," emphasizing that conditions on the ground remain "very cruel."1 The organization estimates it needs more than 300 million British pounds over the next six months to restore and maintain critical programs for Palestinians in Gaza.1
