The United Nations World Food Programme is dramatically reducing food assistance to Gaza because of insufficient funding, a decision that will shrink the number of people receiving aid from 1.6 million to 1.1 million1. Daily hot meals distributed through community kitchens will fall from 250,000 servings to 150,000 servings, while residents in remote areas will transition to receiving food every other day instead of daily1.
The reduction stems directly from financial constraints rather than any decline in need or access challenges, according to WFP Palestine director Shaun Hughes, who stated: "The cuts are because of funding, not because need has gone down or because we cannot access"1. The organization urgently requires $450 million to sustain critical operations over the next six months1. Funding for the WFP's 2026 Palestine operations currently falls short of historical levels by approximately half1.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains severe, with nearly the entire population of 2.1 million displaced1. Roughly two-thirds of the population depends on food assistance1, and unemployment exceeds 80 percent1. An international food security assessment projects that 67 percent of the population—approximately 1.4 million people—will face food crisis or worse conditions between July and December 20261.
