A Hong Kong media outlet has reported that Pubu Dunzhu, a Tibetan political figure carefully cultivated by the Chinese Communist Party and currently a standing committee member of Sichuan Province's party committee and director of the United Front Work Department, has not appeared in public for at least half a month, with no official explanation provided.1
Pubu Dunzhu, born in 1972 and a graduate of Tibet University's Tibetan Language Department, previously served as secretary of the Lhasa Municipal Party Committee and was elected as an alternate member of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party in 2022.1 He was transferred to Sichuan in October 2023 as a standing committee member and vice governor, and was reassigned in 2025 to his current position as director of the provincial party committee's United Front Work Department.1 His relocation from Lhasa to Sichuan was interpreted as a setback in his career, as the Lhasa party secretary position typically serves as a stepping stone to the position of Tibet's autonomous region chairman.1
Pubu Dunzhu's absence from public engagements has been conspicuous, including during a provincial party committee study session held on October 9 and throughout October 13-16 when Wang Huning, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, conducted a research visit to Sichuan.1 Official authorities have not disclosed the reasons for his prolonged absence from public activities.1
