A major fire swept through Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday, claiming at least four lives and leaving dozens seriously injured.2 The blaze, which erupted in the afternoon local time, spread rapidly across the facility in what Prime Minister Mark Carney described as a "violent, fast-moving fire."2 The cause is under investigation, though authorities have preliminarily attributed the incident to a ruptured gas pipeline struck during live-fire training exercises conducted in strong wind conditions.2 The Department of Defence stated that "at this time, there are no indications that it was the result of any terrorist activity."2
The emergency response mobilized 22 ambulances and 8 aircraft over approximately 10 hours to evacuate personnel and fight the flames.2 The military base, located roughly 120 miles east of Edmonton and 180 miles north of Calgary, routinely houses more than 1,000 personnel at any given time.2 Carney characterized the incident as one of the most serious peacetime tragedies in Canadian military history.2
