Researchers from Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the University of Cambridge have identified fundamental differences in how male and female skin stem cells behave, with implications for wound healing and skin regeneration.1 By tracking skin stem cells in mice over five months, the team found that female stem cells work in highly coordinated fashion, while male cells operate more independently.1 This divergence is controlled by sex hormones: estrogen promotes stem cell proliferation and coordinates cellular behavior, while testosterone accelerates cell differentiation and maturation.1
The research demonstrates these hormonal effects through targeted intervention.1 When testosterone was removed from male mice, their skin cells began behaving similarly to female cells; administering dihydrotestosterone restored the male pattern.1 Conversely, ovariectomy reduced stem cell proliferation in female mice and eliminated sister cell synchronization, though these effects were partially reversed by estrogen treatment.1 Functionally, female mice showed significantly faster wound closure than males, particularly in the critical first days following injury.1 The study, led by Professor Cedric Blanpain, was published in the journal Nature.1
