Canadian researchers have discovered that psilocybin, the psychoactive compound found in magic mushrooms, significantly diminishes aggressive behavior in mangrove killifish while preserving their normal social interactions.1 The study, published in Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience on October 18, 2026, was conducted by researchers from Acadia University and the University of British Columbia.1
The research team, led by Dayna Forsyth, a research assistant at Acadia University, and senior researcher Dr. Suzie Currie from the University of British Columbia, used three genetically distinct killifish strains in a controlled experimental design.1 One group received psilocybin treatment, another was used to stimulate social interaction, and a third measured the compound's accumulation in the fish's bodies.1 The findings revealed that fish treated with psilocybin showed reduced overall activity and fewer aggressive swimming bursts, while their social display behaviors remained largely unchanged.1
Dr. Currie explained that "swimming bursts are high-energy attack behaviors that represent an escalation of aggression towards the stimulus fish without making physical contact."1 According to Forsyth, "psilocybin's calming effect appears to selectively reduce energetically costly, escalated behaviors while lower-energy social display behaviors remained largely unchanged."1 This selective reduction of high-energy aggressive behaviors while maintaining low-energy social displays offers new insights into how hallucinogenic substances influence behavioral patterns.1
