Astronomers have discovered two supermassive black holes locked in a spiral orbit at the center of galaxy Mrk 501, with a potential collision occurring within the next 100 years.1 The research team, led by Silke Britzen at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, confirmed the existence of the second black hole by detecting a second particle jet through observations spanning approximately 23 years across multiple radio frequencies.1 The two black holes complete one orbital cycle every 121 days and maintain a separation of between 250 and 540 times the Earth-Sun distance.1
The discovery was bolstered by an unusual Einstein ring phenomenon observed in June 2022.1 Each black hole is estimated to possess a mass between 100 million and 1 billion times that of our Sun.1 The findings have been published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Volume 548, Issue 4, in 2026.1
