Researchers at the University of Innsbruck have discovered an exotic quantum state known as a fractional Fermi sea, in which ultracold cesium atoms are pushed out of their normal state under extreme conditions while maintaining hidden order 1. The fractional Fermi sea is a highly excited state that preserves underlying organizational patterns and exhibits characteristic features such as Fedel oscillations 1. This discovery, led by Zeng Yi and team head Hans-Christoph Nägerl, resulted from systematically varying the strength of attractive or repulsive interactions between the ultracold atoms 1.
The findings, published on October 18, 2026, in Physical Review Letters volume 136, issue 23, were developed through collaboration with French theoretical physicist Alvise Bastianello 1. The research team proposes naming the new quasiparticles associated with this state "super-fermions," suggesting the existence of previously unknown excitations within the system 1. While the theoretical study has been published, the corresponding experimental realization research is currently undergoing peer review 1.
