The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines declared the Visayas power grid in yellow alert status on October 18, with the warning period running from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.1 The alert was triggered by the shutdown of generation units at two large coal-fired power plants combined with maintenance work on the Mindanao-Visayas cross-island transmission line, which collectively reduced available generating capacity by 655.5 megawatts.1 During the alert window, the grid is expected to have 2,512 megawatts of available generation capacity against an anticipated peak demand of 2,354 megawatts, with seventeen generation units operating at reduced output.1
In response to the supply constraints, the Department of Energy has directed the deployment of over 250 megawatts of battery energy storage systems and is considering activation of liquid fuel-fired power facilities to ease the strain on electricity supply.1
