Japan's Prime Minister Takaichi Takagi presented an offering at Yasukuni Shrine during its autumn festival, drawing an immediate rebuke from China's embassy in Tokyo.1 Takagi submitted a potted plant known as a "makake," accompanied by a wooden placard inscribed with "Prime Minister Takaichi Takagi."1 Labor Minister Kenichiro Ueno and Diet member Minoru Jono also presented similar offerings during the three-day autumn festival, which began on October 17.1
China's embassy issued a statement condemning the gesture, with a spokesperson asserting that "China strongly opposes Japan's negative actions regarding Yasukuni Shrine."1 The embassy demanded that Japan "deeply reflect on the history of invasion, face up to war crimes, and make a complete break with militarism."1 Since assuming office as prime minister last October, Takagi has not made a personal visit to the shrine itself, though he performed a remote prayer toward Yasukuni Shrine from the parking lot of the Nippon Budokan on August 15, marking the 81st anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II.1
