The Irish Catholic Church is submitting documentation to the Vatican to advance the canonization cause of Father William Doyle, a military chaplain who died while helping wounded soldiers during World War I.1 Father Doyle was killed on August 16, 1917, during the Battle of Passchendaele, and had previously been awarded the Military Cross for his bravery at the Battle of the Somme.1 The diocesan investigation has compiled approximately 3,500 pages of documentation, which will be presented in a ceremony at Mullingar Cathedral on Sunday before being forwarded to Rome.1
The Diocese of Meath opened its inquiry into Father Doyle's life in 2022 and has now completed the preliminary examination.1 Bishop Tom Deenihan of the Diocese of Meath expressed confidence in the case's prospects, stating he is "full of hope" for its success.1 Father Doyle was born in 1873 and grew up in Dalkey, south Dublin, before being assigned to the front lines as a military chaplain in his forties.1
