A Canadian scholar has published a comprehensive biography of Sarah Forbes Bonetta, a Yoruba woman whose extraordinary life intersected with the Victorian royal court.1 The book, titled "Becoming Sarah Forbes Bonetta: A Yoruba Woman at the Court of Queen Victoria," was written by Henry Lovejoy of the University of Colorado Boulder and examines the remarkable and troubling circumstances that brought Bonetta to England.
Born in Nigeria in 1843, Bonetta was captured at age five in 1848 during an attack by Dahomey king's forces in which her family perished.1 In 1850, British naval officer Frederick Forbes brought her to England and presented her to Queen Victoria as a "diplomatic gift."1 The biography reveals that Bonetta was effectively registered as royal property and remained under contract to the Queen until she turned nineteen.1 During her time at court, she attended the 1858 wedding of Victoria's eldest daughter, Princess Royal.1 In 1851, the Royal Mint's chief engraver, Benedetto Pistrucci, created a plaster bust of Bonetta, documenting her presence in this world of privilege that nonetheless confined her freedom.1
Bonetta's life took a tragic turn following her forced marriage to merchant James Pinson Labulo Davies.1 She died in Madeira in 1880 from tuberculosis at just thirty-seven years old.1 Through this biography, Lovejoy brings to light the complex and difficult story of a woman whose life bridged two worlds, offering readers insight into her resilience and the historical forces that shaped her extraordinary journey.
