The violence reflects intensifying conflict over olive harvesting season. Since September 27, Israeli settlers have launched more than 170 attacks in the West Bank, resulting in at least four deaths, over 100 injuries, and the destruction of thousands of olive trees.2 The assault on European diplomats followed a separate attack the previous day on Heidi Levine, a Washington Post photographer, who suffered severe injuries requiring surgical treatment.2 Among additional victims documented during this period was a Palestinian woman in her seventies who was kicked and beaten, and a man who required six stitches for a head wound.2
Belgian Vice Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Prévot has called for the European Union to impose sanctions against the settlers responsible for the violence.2 Local clergy have characterized the escalating attacks as representative of a significant intensification of settler violence rather than isolated incidents.2
