Researchers at the University of California, San Diego have found that semaglutide, a GLP-1 medication, may slow the accumulation of biological aging markers in humans. 1 In a randomized controlled clinical trial involving 108 adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy, approximately half of the participants received weekly semaglutide injections while the other half received a placebo over a 32-week treatment period. 1 Using epigenetic clocks that measure DNA methylation changes, the research team discovered that semaglutide reduced the pace of biological aging by 9 percent, as measured by the DunedinPACE epigenetic clock. 1 The findings have been published in Nature Communications. 1
In a secondary study spanning 24 weeks with HIV and fatty liver disease patients, 42 percent showed slowed biological aging rates, 34 percent demonstrated reduced aging related to all-cause mortality risk, and nearly 49 percent exhibited increased telomere length. 1 The drug's anti-aging effects appear to work through reducing inflammation, metabolic stress, and visceral fat accumulation. 1 The research was conducted by the Stein Institute for Research on Aging at UC San Diego and collaborating institutions, with funding provided by the National Institutes of Health and the James B. Pendleton Charitable Trust. 1
