The ongoing conflict in Gaza has fractured families and left countless individuals stranded across borders, unable to reunite with loved ones. Wijdan, a 43-year-old mother, was caught in an Israeli airstrike on October 17, 2023, that struck the Muhannisen tower and left her entire family injured.1 Her 15-year-old daughter Noor sustained a fractured skull with brain bleeding and required approximately 33 days in intensive care, while her five-year-old daughter Amna suffered severe chest burns.1 By November 30, 2023, Wijdan was forced to take Noor to a hospital in Egypt for continued treatment, leaving behind her husband Hathem, whose severe leg injuries have left him immobilized and without income for the past ten months.1 Wijdan has lost 35 family members in the war.1
Similar separation has befallen Sami, a 29-year-old photographer who fled to Egypt in April 2024 and has remained apart from his fiancée Ola for nearly two and a half years.1 Sami was working in a journalists' tent where four colleagues were subsequently killed, including Hamza, the son of Al Jazeera correspondent Wael Al-Dahdouh.1 Ola, who completed a bachelor's degree in nursing from Gaza Islamic University, has lost approximately 50 extended family members.1 According to health ministry data, at least 73,783 Palestinians have been killed and 174,738 wounded since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.1
