Merchandise trade drove the expansion, with cross-border goods transactions rising 22.1% year-on-year, marking the fastest growth rate in five years1. The increasing use of the Chinese yuan in cross-border settlements reinforced this momentum, with renminbi-denominated transactions climbing 24.1% year-on-year and accounting for over 55% of total cross-border payments1.

Policy reforms also supported the expansion. As of June, 6,911 enterprises in the region had cumulatively conducted 1.06 million transactions under the cross-border trade and investment high-level opening-up pilot scheme, involving 368.8 billion U.S. dollars in transaction volume1. During the first half, the pilot welcomed 1,580 newly qualified enterprises, with private companies comprising 84% of the additions1. The State Administration of Foreign Exchange Guangdong branch revised and released an updated implementation framework for the pilot program in May of this year1.
