Dozens of masked Israeli settlers launched a coordinated assault on Palestinians harvesting olives in the West Bank, injuring multiple people including Heidi Levine, a photographer for the Washington Post.238 The attack occurred near the village of Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah, during the annual olive harvest season.38
According to reports, at least 12 Palestinians were wounded in the violence, including four Palestinian-Americans with dual citizenship.3 Levine sustained injuries from being beaten and kicked repeatedly during the assault.38 She described the attack, stating: "They kept kicking me and kicking me."78 Levine was wearing protective gear including a bulletproof vest and helmet, and was clearly marked as a journalist.8 Her passport, mobile phone, wallet, and equipment were stolen during the attack.8
The settlers employed various weapons in the assault, including nail-studded clubs and stones to attack the farmers.3 Beyond the violence against people, attackers also set fires to vehicles and olive trees.23 According to the UN, settler attacks in the first two weeks of that year had already exceeded the total number of incidents from the entire previous harvest season, with the organization reporting one Palestinian death and over 120 injured during that period.3
Responses to the incident came from multiple quarters. The U.S. State Department condemned any criminal violence by any party in the West Bank and called for investigation and arrests.38 Democratic Senator Chris Coons described the attack as "alarming" and called for "swift justice and accountability for perpetrators of extremist violence on the West Bank."8 The International Federation of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders both condemned the violence, with the latter specifically calling on Israeli authorities to "end this impunity."8
Israeli officials offered a different account of events. Netanyahu's office stated that "facts remain unclear" and claimed approximately 200 Arabs and left-wing activists confronted about 40 Israeli youth at the scene.8 The Israeli Defense Forces deployed personnel to the area and ultimately used tear gas to disperse crowds.3
