Amber Guyger, a former Dallas police officer convicted of murdering her neighbor, has been granted parole after serving seven years of a 10-year sentence.12 Guyger was released on Friday following approval by the Texas parole board, despite objections from the victim's family.2
The shooting occurred in September 2018 when Guyger entered the apartment of Botham Jean, a 26-year-old Black neighbor, and fatally shot him.2 Guyger claimed she mistook Jean's apartment for her own and believed he was an intruder.2 She was convicted of murder in October 2019.2 Prosecutors had requested a sentence of at least 28 years, corresponding to Jean's age at the time of his death.2
Guyger initially applied for parole in 2024 but was denied; however, the parole board subsequently reversed its decision and approved her release.2 She will complete her remaining sentence under supervised conditions.2 The Jean family expressed sorrow over the parole decision and requested privacy.2
