The German Bundestag held a parliamentary debate on acknowledging Germany's colonial history and the genocide committed against the Herero and Nama peoples of Namibia.1 Representatives of Namibian traditional leaders attended the proceedings to urge Germany to issue a formal apology and provide reparations, though the German government has so far committed only to 1.1 billion euros in reconstruction aid over 30 years rather than compensation, and has not issued an official apology.1
Between 1904 and 1908, the German imperial military conducted an extermination campaign in Namibia that killed at least 100,000 indigenous people and displaced an equal number.1 Despite negotiations between the German and Namibian governments since 2021 on a joint statement addressing this history, Germany's commitment remains limited in scope.1 Historian Jürgen Zimmerer highlighted the inconsistency in German parliamentary recognition, noting that "the Bundestag has passed resolutions on the Armenian genocide, the Ukrainian famine, and the Islamic State's genocide against the Yazidis in Iraq, but has not recognized Germany's genocide against the Herero and Nama peoples."1
Critics have pointed to Germany's lack of political will on colonial matters. The German government devoted only four lines in its 144-page coalition agreement to addressing colonialism.1 Additionally, thousands of human remains are believed to still be held in German institutions, and descendants of victims have called for their repatriation.1
