Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory have discovered that activating the PPARD protein in immune cells enables them to burn fat more efficiently and attack tumors more effectively, potentially slowing or halting cancer growth.1 In laboratory experiments, this approach showed promising results against colorectal cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and melanoma.1 The findings have been published in the journal Nature Immunology.1
The research centers on enhancing the fitness of immune cells through metabolic manipulation. According to Semir Beyaz, a lead researcher on the team, "It's all about cell fitness. What cells eat affects who they are. When immune cells burn more fat, they become more fit for fighting cancer."1 PPARD-activated CAR-T cells demonstrated the ability to reduce or prevent tumor growth across multiple experimental models.1 Colorectal cancer has emerged as a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among people under 50 years old.1
