Germany's Federal Parliament has passed legislation establishing a monthly state pension contribution scheme for children aged 6 to 18 years old.1 Under the plan, the government will contribute €10 (approximately $11) per month toward private retirement savings accounts for each eligible child.1 Parents and grandparents will have the option to make additional contributions, with an annual ceiling of €6,840 (approximately $7,500).1
Supporters of the initiative argue it will strengthen retirement security for many citizens. Social Democratic Party lawmaker Michael Thews stated that the plan would help numerous individuals build adequate retirement savings.1 However, critics have raised concerns about potential inequalities the scheme may create. Green Party politician Stefan Schmidt characterized the system as a "two-tier" model, warning that children whose parents can afford larger voluntary contributions will accumulate significantly more benefits than those receiving only the baseline government payment, describing this advantage as dependent on "winning the parent lottery."1
The legislation still requires approval from the Bundesrat, Germany's upper chamber representing the states, before it can take effect.1
