The Strait Exchange Foundation (SEF) has raised alarm over an expanding campaign by mainland Chinese authorities against the Yiguandao religious sect, now targeting Taiwanese residents with long-term residence and employment in China. SEF Secretary-General Luo Wen-jia disclosed that four Taiwanese Yiguandao adherents were detained between April and July 2024, all of whom remain in custody 1.
The cases reveal a significant shift in enforcement scope. In April, authorities detained a Taiwanese resident holding a mainland residence permit in Fujian; a Taiwanese teacher working in Dongguan was detained in May; a Taiwanese businessman in Shenzhen was detained in June; and in July, a Taiwanese national who had relocated to Zhangzhou, Fujian after retiring was detained 1. This marks a departure from past enforcement patterns that primarily targeted individuals engaged in short-term religious exchanges. "What seemed safe in previous years does not guarantee safety now and in the future," Luo stated 1. Luo further emphasized that "engaging in private Buddhist worship within one's own home does not guarantee safety" either 1.
In October 2024, three Taiwanese Yiguandao believers were prosecuted in Guangdong under Article 300 of the Criminal Law, which addresses crimes involving organizing and exploiting sectarian groups to undermine legal implementation, receiving sentences of two to three years 1. Among the three, one remains incarcerated, one has completed their sentence and returned to Taiwan, and another has finished serving time but has not yet been able to return 1. The SEF has advised affected individuals to consider returning to Taiwan or exercising extreme caution and reducing the frequency of religious activities while on the mainland 1.
