国铁集团启动全国铁路列车车次编排改革

China's State Railway Group has initiated a comprehensive overhaul of train numbering across the nation, restructuring both the letter prefixes and numeric designations used to identify passenger and freight services.1 The reform will be implemented in two phases: the first batch, covering conventional passenger trains, tourist trains, and freight trains, will take effect in late November, while the second batch, encompassing high-speed and EMU passenger trains, will roll out in late December.1

The redesign significantly expands the capacity for train numbering in the EMU passenger train category, increasing the available letter prefixes from four to seven, which allows for approximately 40 percent more train numbers to be assigned.1 The new system introduces five additional letter designations—X for Fuxing trains operating at 350 kilometers per hour or faster, T for special dynamic trains at 300 kilometers per hour, K for rapid trains at 200–250 kilometers per hour, N for fast passenger trains at 140 kilometers per hour, and V for conventional trains at 120 kilometers per hour.1 This standardized classification system enables passengers to quickly identify a train's speed category, service type, and operational range through its letter prefix and number sequence.

The reorganization addresses a critical resource constraint: during peak travel periods such as May Day and National Day holidays, G-prefix high-speed trains consume over 90 percent of available number allocations, creating scheduling bottlenecks.1 To accommodate the shift, the existing X designation previously assigned to freight trains has been reallocated to passenger services, with all freight trains now using the B prefix for block trains.1 The 12306 online booking platform will display the updated train numbers for affected services within the 15-day advance ticket sales window prior to their debut.1
