China's state health authorities have concluded a sweeping investigation into allegations that multiple diaper brands contained formamide, a potentially harmful chemical. The Economic Reference News reported in mid-June that several diaper products had tested positive for the substance 1. In response, China's disease control authority launched a comprehensive inspection of 168 manufacturers, covering 180 brands and testing 368 batches of finished products along with 32 samples from critical components 1. The investigation yielded no detectable levels of formamide in any of the tested samples 1.
Following the probe, authorities also pursued accountability measures. A physician surnamed Yu at the Shandong Public Health Clinical Center, who had released inaccurate information about the issue in violation of regulations, was stripped of his medical license and barred from conducting clinical medical research for five years 1. Additionally, Yu faced disciplinary action including a reduction in rank, one year of probation within his party affiliation, and removal from his position as distinguished director 1.
