One Nation has put forward a plan to provide parents of newborns in Victoria with a $2,000 subsidy, projected to cost $136 million over four years.1 The party has simultaneously stated it will not alter the state's abortion legislation.1
The proposal emerged following announcements by the Labor Party and the Liberal Party to cover out-of-pocket costs for abortion care. Labor has committed $30 million over four years to eliminate these costs and plans to expand the medical abortion window from nine to ten weeks, while reviewing the feasibility of extending it to twelve weeks.1 The Liberal Party subsequently pledged to match Labor's abortion care policy.1 One Nation's deputy leader Coleen Hartwig declared: "We will not touch the abortion laws."1
The proposal has drawn criticism for presenting reproductive health as a false binary choice between abortion and maternal care. Sally Hasler, chief executive of Women's Health Victoria, welcomed the bipartisan cooperation between the two major parties on abortion care access.1
