Yemen's former Prime Minister Mouin Abdulmalek Said has warned that the future of Western security depends on control of Taiz, a strategically vital southwestern city now emerging as a new battlefront between Iran-backed Houthi forces and the Yemeni government.1 The city, home to over 500,000 people, has become increasingly contested as the conflict intensifies in a region critical to global security.1 Said, who served as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2024, stressed that the loss of Taiz would have catastrophic consequences and called for increased Western military support to prevent such an outcome.1
The Houthi military escalation has transformed the regional threat landscape. Last September, the Iranian-backed militants launched operations along Yemen's Red Sea coast, breaking a period of relative calm that had held since a 2022 ceasefire.1 Said highlighted the dramatic evolution of Houthi capabilities over the past decade, noting that in 2017, the group possessed only crude missiles incapable of hitting targets. By March 2025, when the United States conducted strikes in Yemen, the Houthis had clearly acquired dozens of guided missiles, anti-ship weapons, and drones.1 The group's arsenal has demonstrated unprecedented reach: in December 2020, a Houthi missile attack on Aden airport killed 28 people and wounded 107, including Said himself, with a missile that traveled 186 miles (299 kilometers); in January 2022, the militants struck an Emirati oil tanker with a missile fired from over 900 miles away.1
Said characterized the current threat as emblematic of a "new era of radical terrorism" defined by semi-state actors and militia groups leveraging inexpensive technology to menace powerful nations.1 He urged the West to recognize the danger posed by potential Houthi control of Yemen, emphasizing that the strategic Mandeb Strait and access routes to Aden remain at risk.1
