Over the past three months, China has consecrated five diocesan bishops in accordance with a provisional agreement between Beijing and the Vatican, with newly appointed prelates trending notably younger.1 The most recent consecration involved Ding Zuyao, bishop of Haimen Diocese, who at 40 years old has become mainland China's youngest bishop.1 Pope Francis approved Ding's candidacy for the episcopate on August 24.1
The consecrations occurred in successive waves: in late July, Chang Yanfeng was consecrated as bishop of Chifeng Diocese at age 42, alongside Duan Yongkun's appointment as auxiliary bishop of Bayannur Diocese;1 in late August, Liu Honggang became bishop of Datong Diocese;1 and in early September, Ding Yang was consecrated as bishop of Chongqing Diocese.1 According to Mok Cheuk-wai, assistant professor in the Department of Applied Social Sciences at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the appointment of younger bishops reflects the mutual aim of both Beijing and the Vatican to ensure long-term stability within dioceses through the coming decades.1 The scholar noted that the provisional agreement between the two parties has been operating effectively.1
