The World Health Organization has published its inaugural Global Report on Drowning: Prevention Leading a Killer, revealing the scale of a largely preventable public health emergency. Approximately 372,000 people die from drowning annually worldwide, with more than 40 deaths occurring every hour 1. Drowning ranks among the ten leading causes of death for children and adolescents globally 1.
The burden of drowning falls disproportionately on vulnerable populations and regions. Over half of all drowning deaths involve individuals under 25 years of age 1, while children under 5 face the highest drowning risk 1. Males are twice as likely to die from drowning as females 1. Geographically, more than 90 percent of drowning deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, concentrated primarily in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Western Pacific region 1.
WHO Director-General Margaret Chan stated that "drowning is an unnecessary death that can be prevented. National and local governments must take action to implement the simple prevention measures proposed by the World Health Organization" 1. The organization recommends a range of protective measures including installing water safety barriers, teaching children swimming skills, and strengthening flood management capacity 1.
