WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has announced the launch of an independent panel to assess the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic 1. The Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response (IPPPR) will be co-chaired by Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former President of Liberia 1. According to Tedros, "Prime Minister Clark and President Sirleaf were selected through a process of broad consultation with Member States and world experts" 1.
The evaluation was mandated by the 73rd World Health Assembly through a resolution requiring the WHO to conduct an independent and comprehensive assessment 1. The panel will deliver its findings in phases: a progress update will be discussed at an Executive Board special session in September, an interim report will be presented at the World Health Assembly resumption meeting in November, further discussion will take place at the Executive Board regular session in January 2021, and a final report will be submitted to the World Health Assembly in May 2021 1.
