The ACT-Accelerator, a global health initiative coordinated by organizations including Gavi, CEPI, and the World Health Organization, has unveiled a new strategic plan requesting $23.4 billion in international investment to tackle disparities in access to COVID-19 vaccines, diagnostic tests, and treatments across the globe 1. The funding, to be deployed through September 2022, would be allocated as follows: $7 billion for diagnostic tools, $7 billion for vaccines, $3.5 billion for treatments, and $5.9 billion for health system response connectors 1. The initiative aims to prevent at least 5 million additional deaths and save the global economy more than $5.3 trillion, according to estimates from the International Monetary Fund 1.
Currently, a stark disparity exists in the distribution of COVID-19 tools: only 0.4 percent of diagnostic tests and 0.5 percent of vaccines are being used in low-income countries, despite these nations representing 9 percent of the global population 1. The plan targets vaccination coverage of 43 percent in COVAX AMC countries, with a global goal of 70 percent coverage by mid-2022 1. To date, the ACT-Accelerator has delivered over 425 million vaccine doses to 144 countries and territories and distributed more than 128 million diagnostic tests 1. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed that "adequately funding ACT-Accelerator is an urgent priority for global health security," while South African President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted that only 8 percent of Africa's population has received a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine 1.
