The World Health Organization has dispatched 72 tons of trauma and emergency surgical supplies to support relief efforts following devastating earthquakes in Türkiye and the Syrian Arab Republic 1. The initial charter flight carrying 37 tons of materials departed for Türkiye on February 9, with a second charter of 35 tons scheduled to arrive in Syria the same day 1. A third shipment containing 37 tons is expected to reach Syria on February 12 1. These supplies, valued at $826,000, are intended to benefit approximately 400,000 people across both nations 1.
The medical materials have been sourced from WHO's global logistics hub based in Dubai and will enable treatment of 100,000 patients and support 120,000 emergency surgical procedures, with the third shipment projected to extend assistance to an additional 300,000 individuals 1. To support the emergency response, WHO has released more than $16 million from its emergency fund, with $3 million mobilized within hours of the disaster 1. Prior to these shipments, WHO had already distributed pre-positioned medical and surgical supplies to 16 hospitals in northwestern Syria on February 6 1. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that "these life-saving health supplies are critical for treating the injured and providing emergency care to all those affected in both countries" 1.
