The World Health Organization and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees have signed an updated and expanded agreement to improve public health services for the world's forcibly displaced populations.1 The new partnership, which supersedes a 1997 accord between the two organizations, aims to provide comprehensive support to approximately 70 million people globally who have been forcibly displaced, including 26 million refugees, 40 million internally displaced persons, and stateless individuals.1 The collaboration, which has spanned more than two decades, places particular emphasis on protecting these vulnerable populations from COVID-19, especially given that 80 percent of refugees reside in low- and middle-income countries with fragile health systems.1
As part of the reinforced partnership, UNHCR has joined the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and secured $10 million in support to strengthen pandemic prevention and response efforts in countries including Jordan, Kenya, and Lebanon.1 The fund itself has accumulated $214 million as of the agreement's signing, with over $100 million already allocated toward COVID-19 control measures.1 In statements on the partnership's significance, UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi stated that "long-term partnerships are essential to containing the pandemic," while WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus affirmed the organizations' commitment to "protecting the health of those forced from their homes."1
