Leading United Nations agencies have issued a public call for international donors to provide emergency funding of $350 million for the global humanitarian response supply system to combat COVID-19.1 The appeal comes as part of the broader COVID-19 Global Humanitarian Response Plan, which was launched by the UN Secretary-General on March 25, 2020, with a total funding requirement of $2 billion.1 To date, only approximately $550 million in pledges have been secured, representing roughly one-quarter of the amount needed.1
The World Food Programme is among the agencies requiring additional resources to expand its operational capacity, including establishing international logistics hubs, regional transshipment centers, and air transport services to deliver supplies and assistance to the most vulnerable populations.1 The Central Emergency Response Fund has already released $95 million to initiate COVID-19 response efforts.1 According to the agencies' assessment, a minimum of 12 months will be required before vaccines become available, underscoring the critical need for sustained funding to maintain the emergency supply infrastructure during this prolonged crisis.1
