The World Health Organization's African Region Certification Commission has officially certified that the African region has eliminated wild poliovirus, marking a historic milestone in global disease control efforts 1. The certification follows four years without a single new case of wild poliovirus in the region 1.

This achievement means that five of the six WHO regions have now achieved wild poliovirus-free status, representing more than 90 percent of the global population 1. Wild poliovirus transmission continues in only two countries: Pakistan and Afghanistan 1. The African region encompasses 47 countries whose governments have accomplished this feat 1.

While celebrating the elimination of wild poliovirus, health officials have emphasized the need for continued vigilance against vaccine-derived poliovirus. Sixteen countries in the African region are currently dealing with type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV2) 1. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated: "The elimination of wild poliovirus in Africa is one of the greatest public health achievements of our time" 1. Holger Knaack, President of Rotary International, added: "Since 1996, we have made remarkable progress. Today's milestone tells us that polio eradication is possible, as long as the world maintains its commitment" 1.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which has led this effort, is guided by six core partners: the World Health Organization, Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance 1.
