Over 150 countries have joined COVAX, a global mechanism designed to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines worldwide.1 Seventy-five countries have submitted expressions of interest to participate, alongside up to 90 lower- and middle-income nations, collectively representing more than 60 percent of the global population.1 The initiative is jointly led by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance (supported by the Gates Foundation), the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and the World Health Organization.1
The facility aims to deliver 2 billion doses of regulatory-approved or WHO-prequalified COVID-19 vaccines by the end of 2021.1 Participating countries will receive vaccines distributed equally based on population proportions, with initial priority given to healthcare workers before expanding coverage to 20 percent of each nation's population.1 AstraZeneca has committed to supplying 300 million doses to COVAX.1 To support vaccine procurement, COVAX's Advance Market Commitment funding mechanism has raised nearly $600 million toward its $2 billion target.1 Among the nine vaccine candidates supported by CEPI, seven have already entered clinical trials.1 Participant nations span multiple continents and include G20 members such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.1
