WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has urged G20 leaders to take globally coordinated action against the COVID-19 pandemic, presenting a three-part strategy to mobilize international response. At a G20 summit, Tedros emphasized the urgency of the crisis, stating: "You have come together to confront the defining health crisis of our time: We are at war with a virus that threatens to tear us apart - if we let it." 1 He outlined his approach through three key principles: "Fight, unite, ignite," calling for sustained efforts to combat the virus, strengthen global solidarity, and establish comprehensive pandemic prevention mechanisms. 1
The G20 responded to this appeal by committing to do "whatever it takes to overcome the pandemic." 1 The group pledged to increase funding for vaccine and drug development and promised to fully finance the WHO's strategic prevention and response plan to combat COVID-19. 1 Additionally, G20 leaders tasked the WHO with assessing gaps in pandemic preparedness and reporting findings to G20 finance and health ministers. 1
