The World Health Assembly has endorsed a comprehensive malaria control strategy spanning 2016 to 2030, establishing ambitious targets to reduce the global disease burden by 40 percent before 2020 and by at least 90 percent by 2030.1 The strategy also aims to eliminate malaria in at least 35 new countries over this period.1 These goals build on substantial progress achieved in recent years, with global malaria mortality declining 47 percent between 2000 and 2013, even as the disease claimed approximately 584,000 lives in 2013 alone.1
Concurrent with this strategic approval, the Assembly has authorized the World Health Organization's budget for 2016-2017 at US$4.3849 billion, representing an increase of US$236 million compared to the 2014-15 budget period.1 The malaria control strategy emphasizes core interventions including vector control, chemical prevention, diagnostic testing, and treatment.1
