The 193 member states of the World Health Organization reached consensus at the World Health Assembly and adopted a resolution addressing the harmful use of alcohol for the first time.1 Harmful alcohol consumption causes approximately 2.5 million deaths annually, accounting for nearly 4 percent of global deaths and ranking as the eighth leading risk factor for mortality worldwide.1 Among these fatalities, 320,000 occur in individuals aged 15 to 29 years.1
To address this public health crisis, the WHO has established a global strategy encompassing ten policy recommendation areas designed to help countries reduce harmful alcohol use.1 These policy domains include strengthening health service responses, supporting community-based interventions, implementing pricing policies, and mitigating the public health impact of illegal and unregulated alcohol.1 According to WHO Assistant Director-General Ala Alwan, the resolution and accompanying strategy establish priority areas for coordinated global action on this issue.1
